The fortnightly newsletter from BetterU — the student wellbeing hub
|
|
This issue
A fresh look for BetterU
Howdy! The last time I redesigned this newsletter might have been before COVID. Oh dear. I’m chuffed to finally bring you a new format: quicker to scan, with student stories, programs to try and a resource in the spotlight.
Email can feel a bit broken these days, but a personal note every fortnight, with student co-designed ideas for living your best uni life? I reckon that’s worth celebrating. Have a look around, and tell me what you think of the new design. I’m always happy to keep tinkering. — Gareth

Could mindfulness help with university anxiety?
One student tried guided mindfulness over four weeks while juggling study and shift work. She found it helped her sleep and respond differently when anxiety showed up, while being careful about what a personal experiment can tell us.

Smiling Mind: the student verdict
Our Wellbeing Ambassadors tested the free Australian app. They liked its mood check-ins, sleep content and range of tools, though all that choice can make it tricky to know where to begin. Start with their quick verdict or stay for my deep dive.

More than a drawing group
Roc went from joining a mindful art group to facilitating one. His reflection shows how a welcoming space, freedom to participate your own way and a break from performance pressure can change the experience.

Feeling off? Food, mood and Ayurveda
Khushi’s conversation about food led her from Ayurvedic ideas about balance to the developing science of nutritional psychiatry. A thoughtful invitation to ask better questions about what we eat and how we feel.

Resource spotlight
Finding your way through mental health apps
There are a lot of mental health apps and online programs out there. How do you know where to start? eMHprac has a directory of free or low-cost Australian digital mental health resources, with categories for wellbeing tools, guided programs, counselling, peer support and more.
The directory was built for health practitioners, but I think it’s also useful if you’re curious about the kinds of online support available. It applies listing criteria to resources from reputable organisations; you can explore the options and decide what fits your needs.
